  • The Passing Of Common Sense....

    Posted: 09:47, April 22, 2008

    As I struggle through the onslaught, (or rather the war), of the PA primary taking place today, and struggle through the constant barrage of ridiculous, overbearing and mostly untruthful campaign ads for these liberal Democrat candidates, I got to thinking about Common Sense. And then I was reminded that Mr. Common Sense is deceased..... he has passed away.

    These people who want to be our leaders should be remembering Mr. Sense yet are not. And yet while we're allowing this to happen, well, it's quite apparent that most of the rest of us have forgotten Mr. Sense as well...shame on us! But for as much as I would just love to make this all about two people that I truly consider to be completely void of Common Sense; I can't. And I have to admit also that even for those of us who try hard to abide by the attitudes, the decencies and the lifestyles that Common Sense had always provided for us, even we struggle sometimes with Mr. Sense.

    Try as we might in this day of brutal cynicism and senseless anger, of right and left and right and wrong, of condemnations and finger pointing, and of a world seemingly gone awry; we still have to realize and come to terms with the fact that we too lose our sense of Common Sense. It's time now to somehow resurrect the oh-so valuable ideals of Common Sense and the high moral ground that this country once possessed because of Mr. Sense. This came to me from a gentleman who reminded me of the sad passing of Common Sense.

    London Times Obituary of the late Mr. Common Sense.

    Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was,since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

    He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
    Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
    Why the early bird gets the worm;
    Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

    Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend
    more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children,
    are in charge).

    His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
    overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
    charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
    suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher
    fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

    Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing
    the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
    children.

    It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
    consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but
    could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted
    to have an abortion.

    Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
    and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
    Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself
    from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for
    assault.

    Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
    realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
    her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

    Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust;
    his wife, Discretion;
    his daughter, Responsibility; and his son,
    Reason.

    He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights,
    I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

    Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
    If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and
    do nothing.'

    I thought very highly of this piece and appreciated how succinct it is, I also realized that a number of Mr. Common Sense's traits and characteristics were left out. Nevertheless....I think that most of us can fairly easily figure out what those are and what they used to mean to us.

    Huh? Where'd you get that, E?

    There's a lot of truth to that obit...sadly.

    Since when do schools have responsibility for ANYTHING to do with abortions???

    I think it has to do with back in the days when the school nurses were much more involved with the students and their health. Today....the school nurses and officials cannot get close to the kids. The ACLU and other groups, (who will remain unnamed), would be all over them...for any little reason.

    There was a time when the school nurses were trusted and if they felt that a child might need an aspirin and lay down on the station bed in order to be able to get back to class they did so and didn't have to fear lawsuits and the like.

    Now today...thanks to organizations like the ACLU, it's ok to hand out condoms in schools and to have sex education classes that in some cases are as close to porno as a school can get and parents basically have little to no say. If a girl goes to the nurse with an issue and it turns out that the girl is pregnant...that nurse can't breath a word to the parents and can refer the child to a clinic to learn about her options....such as abortion. And the parents won't know unless the girl tells them!
    That's a big problem in my book. I think you misunderstood "E"...the schools don't take any active role in abortions.

    That piece is so very true and it is quite sad....
