  • Gas & Liberals

    Posted: 03:29, May 26, 2008

259 Spams??? What the f***? Well....I suppose that's what I get for being gone so long, but things must be done and unfortunately that can't always include blogging. But I'm glad to be back and now that means I had better start coming up with things to say.

One thing that can be talked about....and has, is the price of a gallon of gasoline. It's something that's affecting all of us and in everything we do. I don't know about what's going on in every other part of the country where gas is concerned, I do know that in my sisters part it just hit $4.01 and that just angers me. I do feel quite fortunate though because gas here has been hovering around the $3.75 area....even though some places are going to $3.89 and higher, but we have certified gougers around here since there is no regulatory state legislation to stop them! Anyway.....

For those of you who are still up in the air about which political party that you're going to vote with, and you're as mad as I am about this ridiculous gas situation....then you should know about this.

Last week, liberals in Congress voted for the equivalent of a $150 billion tax increase. They voted to make your next trip to the gas station more expensive; to make your next airplane ticket more expensive; to make heating your home more expensive -- even to make feeding your family more expensive.

How did they do it? By voting to block environmentally sound production of U.S. energy.....

Who's to blame for our high gas prices? The oil companies? The Saudis? OPEC? The answer, unfortunately, is closer to home: The "No-We-Can't" Left in Congress.

Last Thursday, with oil at $124 a barrel, liberals on the Senate Appropriations committee voted to block environmentally sound development of oil shale in Colorado.

According to the "Investors Business Daily" there are an estimated 1 trillion barrels of oil trapped in shale in the U.S. and Canada. Retrieving just a tenth of it would quadruple our current oil reserves.

But the "No-We-Can't" Left in Congress -- as they're prone to do -- said no, and Americans will pay the price. Colorado Senator Wayne Allard (R) put it best when he said: "If we are really serious about reducing pain at the pump, this is a vote that would make a difference in people's lives."

Now I don't like Saudi Arabia and I don't believe that they're our friends like George Bush wants us to believe, and I want desperately for us to be able to get away from their oil, and their control over us where oil is concerned. They have us over a "barrel", uhhh....so to speak. But last week (and to their credit) they did more than Congress has done by agreeing to increase oil output to 300,000 barrel's a day. Of course it's not a long term solution....but it's a good start, and it may have us seeing a little relief at the pumps for a while. So for you undecideds out there.....you might want to give some thought to this liberal Congress of ours.

Fuel here is desperately expensive £1.11 a litre!! for unleaded and about £1.29 a litre of diesel!!!!!!! You do the maths - it's crazy.

    Nice to see you posting.

Well, the dollar is worth barely more than Monopoly money and the Saudis are well below peak production. I think that's why prices are so high. Of course, I think there's more to it since the oil companies continue to post record profits.

Now, I don't mind making a profit and could see prices going up to maintain a steady profit margin. But for prices to keep increasing and for the profit margins to keep increasing is not something I care for.

This is just one instance of one of the parties blocking efforts to ease our foreign-oil dependence. I'm sure the Left is guilty of many more, and I'd be willing to bet that the Right has done their share, as well.

I had to put in gas today and after running around town, the cheapest I could find was $4.10. DANG! It makes me mad that two days of my new job is going to have to go for gas in my car. They say it will never go back down again, very depressing.

Oh believe me, I give a lot of thought these days to our congress...:(

Thanks Chandra.....I was looking at a comparison of prices between what you pay and what we pay, Holy-freakin-cow!!

Most countries around the world have always paid more in gas but say like in Canada, I heard that though the price of a gallon of gas is higher....the minimum wage is much higher and that effects gas and the economy overall. It made sense...

Well here we'll be taking to our bikes in droves if the prices don't come down - it really makes me think twice before taking Moon Palace out as she only does low mileage being such a great big beast.

By the way I've put a video up on my blog which has Moon Palace in a starring role ha ha!

Rene....it's really sad that the value of our dollar has dropped so low since it's been so mighty since the end of WWII

"Now, I don't mind making a profit and could see prices going up to maintain a steady profit margin. But for prices to keep increasing and for the profit margins to keep increasing is not something I care for."

You're kinda parroting what Hillary and Obama are saying that this is what they would do while in office, and what that says is....our government wants to penalize you for making a lot of money and so we'll take some of it....that's pure socialism.

I get the liberal mindset that, we'll take X amount of you're huge profits and it'll be X percentage and you'll keep the rest. Now....while the government is spreading a good bit of you're wealth around, (and believe you me you won't be the only one whose money is being spread about), you'll be scratching your head wondering how you'll continue to invest profits into new research, (like you're used to doing), and invest in other things.

But then....you realize that the only thing you can do to even things up is to pass the penalty along to the consumer, in other words, raise the price of gas even more.
And since the libs won't let us start drilling in Anwar and Colorado, and since the Saudis will still have us over the "barrel" and their production is down, why we're not sure, so we can't get more, or enough, well......you'll say my hands are tied, there's nothing else I can do.

I'm just using you to make my analogy easier....I'm not saying anything bad.

Laurie...."YIKES!!!", $4.10? Yes I've heard that we'll never know the old days again.

I've seen a lot more people on bikes during regular business hours so I'd guess they're making the switch.

I've seen bits and pieces of "Moon Palace" in some of your photos, but I'll have to watch the video of the raising star!

I make just a little over minimum wage. With gas prices rising higher every day, I am basically making the money to put in the tank to get me to that job. If something isn't done soon about one or the other, I might as well quit working. I am not getting ahead at this point! I keep looking for something with better pay, but that also means a longer drive. I fell like a dog chasing it's tail.

Here in Minnesota our government approved a gas tax hike, but shot down a raise in minimum wage! I guess they want us poor folk to stay poor!

Yes they do Lisa....it keeps you dependent on the government and helps to justify more government programs. And I know exactly what you mean about the dog chasing it's tail....but keep looking, something better is bound to come around.

I didn't say to take their money. Like I said, I don't have a problem with making money. I'm just not happy with what little I have contributing to greater and greater profits. At some point, the economy is going to start breaking down when people won't be able to afford the basics or to be able to go to work.

Of course, raising taxes and then blocking the development of alternatives is definitely not the way to go. I don't think either side is really going to do anything to help.

I don't even get that for help!

I am white, no children and married! I am the new minority that gets over looked. Like your newest post states...there are "groups" for everything...but not me! I would be racists if there was a group that I fit in.

    I just keep treading water!

Drilling in ANWR wouldn't do anything to reduce the price of gas because (a) the price of gas is more determined by global demand (which is increasing dramatically) than by global supply (which isn't increasing appreciably) and (b) under the best estimates, the amount of oil available there would only offset about 2% of the consumption of oil in this country, not enough to even be a footnote in terms of affecting the global supply.

BTW, I love the expression "oil trapped in shale". We must free the oil! Free the oil! Free the oil!

I don't advocate penalizing the oil companies for being successful. Frankly I'm all for higher fuel costs if it finally gets people off their asses with regard to formulating an intelligent energy policy and changing energy consumption behavior. And I don't think any of that will happen until gas is $6 or $7 per gallon.

I only wish that the record-breaking profits were going toward the development of alternative energy sources in much larger amounts. But, no, penalizing the Big Oil companies isn't going to do much to help out matters.

BUT! I am absolutely, 100% VEHEMENTLY against giving them federal subsidies like we do now (taxpayer-funded, I might add) when they are making such insanely large quarterly profits. That makes absolutely no sense to me at all. I find it indefensible.
