  • Ghost Town & Miscellaneous

    Posted: 09:27, March 24, 2009

Wow.....it's almost like a ghost town around here, sort of like a skeleton of what it used to be. For instance, it used to be that when you'd sign in, and it took you to the "My Account" page, there would be quite a few people signed on....many of whom you would know. Nowadays I sign in and there maybe 2 or 3 people on....today when I signed on there was only one other person signed on. Kinda makes you wonder what happens to all the newcomers you'd see being displayed on the home page as the newest members. Must be frustrating to get all excited about signing up and start cruising around only to be reading about Keith and losing the domain name, and reading the comments and complaints etc. And then to see pyhpens updates and announcements about what's going on. You'd be thinking....Hmmmm.

Well anyway.....speaking of signing up I went ahead and signed up on EFX 3, and using Rubicon-"a line crossed" just as I am here. However, while taking the grand tour and perusing the what's-what's of the place, I realized just how computer illiterate I am! I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do. On the other hand though, it does show just how good folks like WelshPixie are at putting together a new host blog. I offer up accolades and kudos for doing such a great job.....not to mention all of the time, patience, and sweat involved in putting the whole thing together! But for me? I'll try to not cry and whine too loud like a little baby that needs its diaper changed when I realize that I have no freakin' clue as to what the hell I'm doing!

Yikes......one things for sure, it's all created a big diversion and distraction for me, because as you may, or may not have noticed that I haven't touched anything political since I've gotten back. Sheesh.....imagine that! The state in which I currently reside, in one day alone 22,000 jobs were lost....that's just one day! And sadly this is happening nationwide, not just here. And I don't have much in the way of anything positive to say about Obama and his administration. I mean, we're in trouble right now and he's spending more and more, the Treasury Dept. is printing money that we cannot afford, jobs are flying out the window everywhere.....and we continue to bail out institutions that should be left to file for Chapter 11 and reorganize and streamline themselves. Us taxpayers are looking at a whopper of a bill that's going to have to get paid, and we all know how that has to happen.

I really feel for those that are losing their jobs right now; especially in this climate. I'm now worrying about my own stance and status where work is concerned. You know....a lot of folks didn't even see that pink-slip coming, figuring that they had job security only to abruptly find out differently in one fell swoop. Pretty scary me thinks.

Well before I wrap up, I'm putting a link at the bottom that I strongly encourage you to click on. I guarantee that you'll be astounded and amazed.....and if you're like me you'll find yourself watching this video a couple of times, just to see if you can figure it out. You'll want to watch this video!

*heads off to Rubicon at efx3* It's not so hard once you start looking around..... take your time and you'll get there.

I'd do what Chandra suggested. When you log in, from your 'dashboard', start at the top left and work your way to the right, looking at all the menus. Then start at the top left again, and work your way down. The menus on the left side are pretty much the same as the ones across the top.

If you get stuck with something, even if you think it's a stupid question, drop me an email. I have my gmail open all day (South Africa time). It's delyth.angharad@gmail.com :)

And thanks for the thanks, hehe. You are most welcome.

(I'm pretty sure that new signups have been disabled here on efx2blogs because of all the spam users who were registering. The number at the top left of the home page has been at 346 for a long while.)

Styles and I were talking the other day about how we are kind of in a "bubble" when it comes to financial and job loss woes, it's not effecting us and it not effecting anyone we are friends with here. It has touched friends and family members around the nation(and the world) but to us it's almost like it doesn't exist, and I know exactly how blessed we are to be in this bubble.

Yarrrr, if you need help setting up, just yell. Themes have to be customised using CSS only, and that's a bit daunting for some, but we have been helping out with that.

Anyhoo, I am looking forward to having merciless political arguments (er... debates... but fisticuffs are more fun, no?) with you in the very near future, haha. :D Well, when next I feel like being in a politically confrontational mood, that is... it comes in phases.

    See you there.

I am totally lost over at efx3 too! I haven't had too much time to spend looking around as yet, but I imagine once we all get settled in things will be a little easier. There are some tutorials on the main page, which are totally helpful and once I get a minute, I will walk myself through them all. I have been daunted everywhere at first and soon I am buzzing around like nobody's business.

I've noticed the ghost town too. At first I just thought maybe I was on-line at different times then everyone else. I'm trying to figure the other place out. I notice on their on-line thingy it usually only shows 1 or 2 people on at a time too.

I think I might set up a "Trial and Error" blog over there to experiment with learning how to alter templates, then delete it once I know what I'm doing.

I'll try to find you over there Michael. I don't know anything about css. but members of the administration are being very helpful. It's very easy to add widgets and plugins from your side menu. Heck, if I can do it, so can you!

    At 01:32, March 25, 2009, WelshPixie said:
Yeah, the 'Online Now' widget on efx3 isn't completely accurate. It times people out too easily. The other widget - StatPressCN - is better; from your dashboard if you hover over the drop-down menu for StatPressCN and select 'friends', you'll see a list of the last group of friends to visit your blog along with the times of their clicks. It shows much more activity than the Online Now one. Rusty's going to use that friends list to generate a list like we had on the old efx2, that 'last 10 people to visit' thing. :)

Hey Pix.....that's cool that we'll have the visitors list back, I always enjoyed that!
Don't be too surprised if you do get an email or two from me when I get stuck. And Rusty too. It would seem that someone may be chomping at the bit for some good 'ole fashion political drama...er, debate. You need fear not my friend....I'm storing stuff up and getting ready to pounce!

And Laurie, Pix, and Chandra....I'm getting emails showing that you've left comments and it says it's waiting for my approval. I'll have to change that since I don't feel the need to approve anything that folks may have to say....and I wouldn't want there to be a delay in comments being posted. I'm going to head over there shortly to study some more.

I noticed Psyphen posted a notice indicating that should any of us get abusive comments either on the blog or in the inbox that he'd like to be notified. Funny that that should come up....anyone who's visited here on any kind of regular basis, and reads through my political posts and looks through the comments left would know who has been extremely abusive on my comment page.

I've sort of just ignored the nastiness because I have to consider the source. But it would seem that this individual has honored my request to not visit here anymore....I've not had anymore comments of any kind. But nevertheless, I never felt the need to report this person, I think that folks could see for themselves what was what. However.....in the future I may very well report abuse of any kind.

But ya know.....people around here are more family than anything else, and if there is something that's disagreed upon, it's handled in a polite and conscientious way. And the family part? I think that's what makes EFX stand out compared to other places. It's much more personal and much easier to make friends here.....and I'm sure that will travel over to # 3 as well.
Other sites are pretty impersonal comparatively speaking, and making friends ain't near as easy. And another thing.....folks here are quick to extend a hand to newcomers, to welcome them and offer help getting set up if needed. That's something I don't think you'll see anywhere else.

Has anyone ever signed up to LiveJournal? I did a long time ago just to see what it might be like....talk about a dead place as far as any kind of interaction. And quite limited in what you can do to your page. I haven't bothered with that place since shortly after I signed up....and won't.

Anyway.....that's how I feel about EFX and I know that I'm far from being the only one!!

    At 06:59, March 25, 2009, WelshPixie said:
I tried LiveJournal when I left AOL journals. It was awful. Absolutely no interaction, especially after coming from a place like AOL Journals where there were huge communities being built.

When you get over to efx3, have a look at the tutorials page and read through the posts on the main page. There's a lot of reading, but there's helpful stuff in there. I've explained somewhere how to disable that 'moderation' thing for comments.

    Have fun. :)

Hmmm....I started with AOL, the old dial-up thing, but I don't remember any AOL Journals, but then I may not have been paying attention. Back then I didn't really know what a Weblog was.
For some reason, (I don't remember exactly why), once I got high-speed broadband I found Modblog, and signed up figuring that I'd check it out.

It wasn't very long at all before I started making friends there, but as many of you know Modblog went terribly south and I wound up over at Blogger which was only so-so. Then someone at Blogger left a comment and talked about EFX so I checked it out and sure enough most all of the folks I'd made friends with were there!

Anyway....the rest is history as they say. I'm wondering whether Keith will keep this place once people are all settled over at # 3, or not. Sort of sounded like this new "love" of his life prompted him to get back into EFX....but hey, what the heck do I know!!

Weblog? Is that anything like a Youblog or a Theyblog?

    At 01:26, March 26, 2009, WelshPixie said:
Depends where you're from. For you guys I imagine it'd be more like an Usblog. ;)

Well....that's how I first heard of a blog, it was called a Weblog. I sort of likened it to a way of saying "web-log". Hey, what did I know back then?? Nuttin'....and sadly? I still don't! Ha ha.

Every so often I hear that term used, But I think that most everyone knows what a blog is. Especially since blogs have become quite popular in the political arena, and people are making some pretty good money for their opinions. A lot of the political bloggers are being asked to appear on TV and radio as political analysts....Michelle Malkin is a good example.

But you can go ahead and make fun of me....that's ok, happens all the time anyway. LOL!

What? Doesn't everyone know that the term "blog" is just the shortened version of "weblog"???

Well that's what I thought! I was beginning to feel like the odd duck out!

    I thought it was funny.

And I think "weblog" is kind of stuffy and pretentious. And it makes me think of "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down!"

(That's a old toy advertising slogan, for the non-Americans in the bunch."

    At 01:58, March 28, 2009, WelshPixie said:
We have weebles in the UK too ;p

I guess weblog sounds a bit stuffy now after so many years of shortening it to 'blog', but I do see some professional blog offering sites still use it, heh

    At 08:43, March 29, 2009, Rubicon said:
I laughed at your joke, I guess I just didn't post it. After all these years the term Weblog sounds weird....like seriously outdated. I suppose stuffy works too.

Yeah....every so often I still see Weblog used for something or other, I really don't care, I'm content with blog.

    At 09:01, March 29, 2009, WelshPixie said:
    even efx uses it, hehe.
